The increase in fuel prices continue to effect every avenue of travel, including the airlines. If you have taken notice to the news lately, you have heard about numerous cut backs, and implemented programs that will have a lasting affect on the consumer, as well as the employees of these airlines.
Northwest announced that they will be reducing mainline domestic and international capacity in the fourth quarter by 8.5% to 9.5%. Northwest will be removing a combination of 14 Boeing 757s and Airbus narrow body aircraft from the fleet. The airline's DC-9 fleet will also be reduced in the beginning of 2008 from 94 aircraft to only 61. Northwest has not yet determined how many employees could lose their jobs as a result of this action.
Delta announced their plans to reduce domestic capacity by 13% in the second half of 2008, with plans to remove the equivalent of 15 to 20 mainline and 60 to 70 regional aircraft from its operation by the end of 2008.
Air Berlin, Germany's second-largest airline Berlin Bezirke carrier will cut its domestic service 10% and its long-haul service 30%. One of the routes to be eliminated this winter will be Dusseldorf-New York Kennedy.
In an attempt to increase their cash flow, Frontier Airlines will begin selling sandwiches, salads and fresh fruit cups on select flights beginning July 1st. Frontier has also begun selling Rockstar energy drinks on all flights as well as Dasani bottled water on select flights.
The airlines continue to talk over the idea of merging with another, like Delta and Northwest. While Continental and United have already recently agreed to link their networks and services that would include Continental joining the Star Alliance.
The changes and cut backs in the airline industry are necessary for them to continue running an effective business. And for the consumer, it is recommended to book your flights far in advance, plan ahead, and take note of any airline changes. And a person can still enjoy their vacation without any major inconvenience.
