Perhaps the hit at Watches & Wonders 2022, the Ulysse Nardin Freak S is an interesting evolution of the brand's iconic watch, which debuted in Athens as a standalone label. The Freak S is equipped with a double balance wheel, but mounted on a central rotor as per the Freak standard.

As Ulysse Nardin’s first dual balance wheel watch, the Freak S is perhaps the coolest iteration of the model since its debut in 2001. It's come a long way since the first generation, with noticeable improvements in style and performance.

While its most obvious feature is the dual balance, the Freak S also includes a few details that enthusiasts will appreciate. First of all, it's a purebred freak. Like the original, it lacks the traditional dial, hands and crown. In contrast, some of the newer Freaks are more traditional in execution.

Thanks to the twin balance wheels linked by a differential, the merry-go-round is more dramatic than ever while promising improved timekeeping.

Meanwhile, the brand's proprietary 'Grinder' system means the Freak S is self-winding, eliminating the hassle of manually winding the massive mainspring via the back of the notch.

Dual balance with differential Freak's overarching theme is the movement that literally stands out. The movement is on three levels - the merry-go-round, the barrel and the winding system, all layered on top of each other.

Most of the movement, including the oscillator and the wheel train, is mounted on a disc that doubles as the minute hand. And because the barrel rotates once every 12 hours, the cover of the barrel is also the hour hand.

The carousel sits on top of the barrel cover, and the pinion meshes with a fixed ring gear. When the barrel cover rotates, it transmits energy to the turntable through the fixed gear, pushing the turntable forward one revolution per hour, thus functioning as the minute hand.

The most interesting aspects of this movement are the differential system and the double balance. Borrowed from the differential gearing in a car transmission, a vertical differential allows two balance wheels to dance at slightly different rates and averages their error.

This is even more effective on the Freak S by tilting the two balance wheels at different angles, allowing each balance wheel to have a different positional deviation, thereby reducing the overall error in the beat frequency.

The brand's chief product officer, Jean-Christophe Sabatier, explained that the differential and double balance were designed to improve accuracy, but were not themselves meant for chronometer certification. Instead, the whole Freak S is a continuation of the fun concepts that started with the original Freak. According to Mr. Sabatier, "movement is king" in any Freak.

While the Freak S is the brand's first double balance wheel watch, Mr Sabatier hinted that it would not be the last, leaving open the possibility for further development of its singular oscillator.
